Social media has so far proved an important tool for businesses and leisure. It has become a part of our lives.

However identity theft is a crime on the rise and social media is one hotspot for such crime.
On many occasions you unconsciously or conciously provide your personal information such as full names, workplace, office address and date of birth to your social media accounts and this information can be manipulated by criminals to commit cyber crimes.

One common mistake social media users make is giving information on their plans like travel before they actually travel. A criminal monitoring your social media account can use this information to rob you because they know exactly when you will travel.

However deleting your social media accounts wont solve this. There are several ways you can keep yourself secure from identity theft.

1. Be in control of the information you give online. Find out how the site will use your information before submitting it.

2. Avoid giving your banking information or adding them to your social media account.

3. Providing as little information on your social media accounts should work best.

Having control of how information on your account is used is key to protecting yourself against identity theft
