Normaly no one will tell you not to download apps from unverified sources. However there are risks accompanied by lust to obtain cheaper software from third party app stores.
Enabling someone else to take control of your device is one the major risks you put your data into by installing from unverified third party app stores. It might give hackers access to your passwords, personal info such as bank account details and so much more.
A third party app is an application made by someone other than the manufacturer of a mobile device or its operating system.
Apple's AppStore and android's GooglePlaystore are the largest official app stores. Each of this stores have apps that are able to run on their respective operating system considering android and iPhone run on different operating systems.
This stores also include millions of third party applications available for users. However, the third party apps on this official stores undergo a very strict development criteria and before a store can upload an application it is veted for malware. So third party apps on these official stores are safe for use.
Note the difference between third party apps and third party app stores.
Third party Appstores may not have same levels of scrutiny for their uploaded applications giving room for many malwares. Infected apps once downloaded usually from these unverified stores infect malicious codes into your device such as ransomware.

These stores may sell cheaper application softwares which would definitely attract you as a user without knowing how much you are putting your privacy at risk.
But it is also important to keep in mind all the applications on third party app stores are not dangerous.
One way to stay safe on third party app stores is by actually not using them. But if you must use them it is important to pre install cyber security products which scan apps for any malwares before installing them.
